We examined the anti-fibrogenic and the therapeutic effect of turnip extracts in thioacetamide (TAA)- induced liver fibrosis experimental animal model. Anti-fibrogenic effect was demonstrated histopathologically and serologically after the animals fed with turnip extracts with synchronous TAA injections for 7 weeks. The animals fed with 20 mg/ml of turnip extracts showed the highest anti-fibrogenic effect. We also examined the therapeutic effect on hepatic fibrogenesis after feeding turnip extracts for 8 weeks following TAA injections for 7 weeks. Animals were fed with 45 mg/ml and 90 mg/ml of turnip extracts, and the same doses were also fed to TAA non-injection group to examine any impacts of high dose turnip extracts affecting animal growth. High doses of turnip extracts did not show any impacts on animal growth, and liver fibrosis was attenuated in the animals fed with turnip extracts compared to the control animals. In this study, turnip extracts induced significant anti-fibrogenic effects, and also it was confirmed to have therapeutic effects on hepatic fibrogenesis. Therefore, mechanisms for anti-fibrogenic effect of turnip extracts should be explored further.
